Bakti Siswa BSBI'03 2011

43 of Bachelor Science Bioindustry students from UPM Bintulu Campus who took BAKTI SISWA course on their 3rd semester chose SK ULU LUBAI as their desired location to carry out their final charitywork as required by the course syllabus. To fulfill the course requirements and to serve the community especially the students of SK Ulu Lubai, these degree students conducted a 1 week English Camp based on their theme ' UPMKB SKUL Intelligence Sharing Programme'. 

       These students were helped and supervised by a group of supervisors assisted by academicians from the Department of Social Sciences of University Putra Malaysia Bintulu Campus. The camp was started on 23rd of October 2011and ended on 27th October. Various activity slots were conducted to enhance the students skills on academic, sports, and music. These activities did not only benefit the students but also the undergraduate students to sharpen their soft skills. Besides that, the university students also had the chance to learn and experience the tradition and culture of people from a different ethnicity and the lifestyle of the people living in a very remote rural area.


SEKOLAH KEBANGSAAN ULU LUBAI

GLOBAL RHYTHM

This activity was divides into two slots 2 hours each. The students of SKUL were taught modern Hindustani dance moves. For your information, the SKUL dance group can perform almost 25 types of dances and most of it are traditional ethnic resembling dances. They often perform in their school's official events and also when they have visitors to Ulu Lubai. The hindustani dance was performed in the closing ceremony on the last day of the camp.


SMART TEACHER (TUTOR MUDA)

        Smart teacher slot was conducted not to teach the students on their academic based subjects but it was more to instill love and passion in gaining knowledge among the students. The students were divided into two groups which was level 1 and 2. Level one students played puzzles and describing pictures; whereas, Level 2 students were taught on simple science theories, easy to remember mathematical problems solving techniques and quizzes. Through this sessions the students enhanced their confidence level to communicate in English. The students also showed their creativity and critical thinking skill throughout the activity.


MY GREEN EARTH

Green School was a project where the UPMKB delegates and community of Ulu Lubai work together to plant the seedlings of Iron wood tree, Messua ferra. The participants were divided into 10 groups and each group was provided with a seedling to be planted at allocated site. Through this project a slight awareness on conservation of nature was instilled among the young generation. Indirectly, the students also learned proper method of planting a tree. The trees planted will become a memorable mark of cooperation between UPMKB and SK ULU LUBAI.



SHOW TIME

Show time was a movie session done to give the students leisure time at the same time enhancing their listening skills. Besides that, the quiz session after the movie improved the students' ability in recalling information which they get from the movie. During this slot all the students, facilitators, and even teachers enjoyed themselves.



OUTDOOR GAMES ('Sihat dan Cergas' and Telematch )

All of the students and facilitators participated in these sessions which was conducted everyday throughout the camp. During 'Sihat dan Cergas' slot and Telematch slot the students were able to get closer with each other in their group and with the facilitators. Moreover, the activities encouraged team spirit among the students. There was healthy competition among the groups to win the games.


UPMKB Mini Class

The class was decorated and make it resemble UPMKB, by using UPMKB shawls.  This was done do that the studentswill become more encouraged to enroll in universities especially UPM. To make the class more colourful and interesting, colourful origami was hanged in the classroom. New subject information were put on the information board and made moe interesting. Last but not least, herberium collection from UPM Bintulu Campus was put in the classroom.

JUNGLE RHYTHM


When conducting this activity, the students were divided into 4groups. Using the recycled materials,they were assisted to make their own musical intruments. Using their creativity the students created have 4 different musical instrument, which are the drum, castanets, shaker  and tambourine. Then games were played using the musical instruments. At the end of the activity using the recycled musical instruments, they played ‘In The Jungle song’ from Lion King.  This song was also performed on the closing ceremony.


1,2,3 ACTION

1,2,3 ACTION is a mini drama session. The students were given prepared drama scripts and they were asked to act out the drama. Students were chosen according to their role play in their mini drama. Training session was also held to reduce the students stage fear and reduce their anxiety. In between the session, few games were conducted such as guessing out the word and spelling bee. This enhances the creativity of the children besides  developing their English language skill.

HEALTHY KIDS WITH ACTIVE MIND

This was the exercise and recreational session where the students get to stretch out their body muscles. Students were gathered in field and session started by doing senamrobik followed by poco-poco dance, and simple ginrama. This builds up a healthy mind and body. This slot was carried out everyday. It was one of the slot that the students looked forward everyday. The students, facilitators, staffs, teachers and even parents enjoyed this slot.

Ice breaking and Team Building

The first session for this programme was carried out to build up  a good relationship between the students and the facilitators. At first, the students were divided into several groups and each group was given different animal theme. Each of them were asked to act out by making the animal sound and gestures. Other activities were ‘simon says’, singing (senyum song), gathering according to favourite colour and date of birth, energizer activities such as ‘I want to kick’, ‘lagu senyum’, introducing cheer and theme song. This enables the students to improve their social skill.
